WEST HILLS, Calif. (Jan. 4, 2015) — In honor of February’s American Heart Month, West Hills Hospital & Medical Center, an accredited full-service acute care facility, is hosting a heart-health seminar. The event will be held at the hospital’s cafe on Thursday, Feb. 4, from 6-8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

“Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the U.S., so educating the public on heart health is of pivotal importance,” said West Hills Hospital’s chief nursing officer, Stephanie Mearns, MN, RN. “This seminar works to shed light on areas of heart health that aren’t well understood, such as unusual heart attack triggers and the symptoms of heart attacks in women, as well as provide suggestions on how to keep your heart healthy.”

The event will be moderated by cardiovascular disease specialist and board certified cardiologist Dr. Farhad Rafii and is to include hands-only CPR training from the American Red Cross. The heart-health seminar will also feature a testimonial from West Hills Hospital patient Brandon Paith, 29. Paith experienced a complete blockage in a major heart artery and first responders brought him to the emergency department at West Hills Hospital. He was quickly transported to the hospital’s Cath Lab, where Dr. Ramin Farshi and his team performed an emergency angioplasty and stent placement of the artery.

“As the first Accredited Chest Pain Center in Los Angeles, we pride ourselves on our evidence-based treatment options for chest pain and continue to pursue improvements and enhancements to our care to improve patient outcomes,” Mearns said. “For Brandon, our team was able to achieve a door-to-balloon time of 43 minutes and a Cath Lab door-to-balloon time of 15 minutes, which is a testament to our expertise in treating heart-related conditions and an important element in his survival.”

In July, West Hills Hospital was recertified as a PCI Accredited Chest Pain Center for its expertise in dealing with patients experiencing the symptoms of a heart attack. For more information on West Hills Hospital’s services, visit www.westhillshospital.com.
