LA County hospital kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with informational seminar series
WEST HILLS, Calif. (Sept. 8, 2015) — The Women's Diagnostic Center at West Hills Hospital & Medical Center is to host an educational seminar series, “The Power of Pink: Surviving Breast Cancer & Beyond,” on Oct. 1, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at the Westfield Topanga Community Center in Canoga Park. The series will cover a number of breast-health-related topics, including methods for preventing, detecting and treating breast cancer — the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for women in the United States — along with strategies for supporting loved ones who are living with the disease.
A featured expert panel, accomplished in the areas of hematology/oncology, surgery, radiology and radiation oncology, will lead the series along with Wellness Oncology & Hematology’s Omid Shaye, M.D., who will serve as the evening’s moderator. In addition to a general overview of the disease, which is diagnosed in more than 220,000 women in the U.S. every year, the panel will also discuss specific issues including new drug therapies, treatment options, breast-health awareness, survivor support and more.
Additional guest speakers who have been personally afflicted with breast cancer will also be present to share their encouraging stories of survivorship. These speakers include LA native Andrea Andress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and treated by Shaye and the Wellness Oncology & Hematology team.
“Information and self-advocacy are critical tools for fighting breast cancer and are the cornerstones for this event,” said Shaye. “From assembling a knowledgeable panel of experts to encouraging powerful storytellers who have dealt with this disease firsthand to engaging advocacy groups that are able to highlight the resources available to survivors in our community, we are furthering breast cancer awareness in a way that is important and beneficial.”
