These stories have been gathered from people who had their procedures at The Center for Bariatric Surgery at West Hills Hospital.
As a nurse, I take good care of my patients. As a mother and wife I take good care of my family. But, as usual, I never took care of myself. Until the doctors wanted to add another blood pressure medication, and said the painful tear in my knee required surgery. My back ached, I wasn't able to participate in family activities, and I was tired all the time.
Something needed to be done. I chose Bariatric surgery because I wanted my life back, and even have the life I always dreamed of.
I needed to do something that was FOR ME and Bypass surgery was the tool I needed to lose weight. I worked as a recovery room nurse with Dr. Paya. I saw his patients, how they did after their surgeries, and their outcomes were great. But most importantly, he cares a great deal for each one of his patients, and spends the time with them to answer any questions or concerns they may have.
Marcy, the Bariatric Coordinator, is my guru and inspiration. She has a lot of knowledge and gives 110% support to the patients. Without her, my experience would not have been as positive as it was! There is a lot of support and encouragement every step of the way.
It's been 2 ½ years since my Bypass surgery with Dr. Paya and what a difference! I feel good about myself, about how I look. My family is extremely supportive of the eating changes necessary to be successful, as well as giving me important emotional support. I try to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and drink plenty of water. I've lost 150 pounds and I no longer need surgery on my knee, nor am I on any blood pressure medications. I now have the life I've always dreamed of. I am truly blessed.
I have only one regret about having Gastric Bypass surgery: I regret I did not meet Dr. Paya and have the Bariatric surgery earlier in my life. I was losing the weight battle. I had no health issues to speak of, but I was obese. I needed to make a change before my health was affected by my weight. I knew surgery was not a “magic pill,” but it was a tool to get me in the right direction.
Diets do work, but you must be real strict, focused, determined...me, I needed to be scared. Having the surgery and not following the program afterwards could do damage to your system as dangerous as some of the health issues. The Center for Bariatric Surgery cares about its patients. The Coordinator, Marcy Meyer, becomes everyone's mom if you let her. She is there in the beginning of your journey and she is there forever and always. Dr. Paya is unique; he cares, he listens, and he is there for you as well. These are the things you need and should want during your journey to a better life.
If you are considering having the surgery, call West Hills Hospital. You will not be sorry. The compliments you receive from your family and friends after you have the surgery are so much sweeter than anything you will ever put between those lips again.
The struggle with my weight seemed to have started the day I was born. All my life I was the chubby cute little girl, and as an adult I did not now want to be known as the chubby cute lady. I spent many years yo-yo dieting and I was losing the battle.
I decided to take control of my life once and for all and have Gastric Bypass surgery.
After much research about the procedure, and different doctors I was introduced to Dr. Paya. This gentleman is truly a godsend. From the very first visit with Dr. Paya and his staff he assured me he would take very good care of me and I would not regret the decision. He and his staff held my hand throughout the entire process assuring me that I would be a success. I can say he is a man of his word.
It has been two years since my surgery and I am the happiest I have been in my entire life. In addition, the staff at West Hills Hospital took very good care of me. I truly felt as if I was the only patient in the entire hospital because I was given red carpet treatment 100%. Every staff member of the Hospital helped to ease my fears. They have attained the best knowledge in how to care for patients having this life changing surgery and that made a difference.
I am forever grateful to the men and women of West Hills Hospital, and the office of Dr. Paya, for giving me a new lease on life. Everyone will always have a special place in my heart.
My only regret with regard to gastric bypass is that I didn't have the guts to do it sooner.
I am very pleased with everything! I just need to get exercising! Dr. Paya and Marcy Meyer - two top caring people!
I'm happy with my decision to have Lap Band surgery. I'm half-way there!
I truly appreciate all the help and information you have given me from the start - it has been so great knowing I can always come to you for support and advice. I am doing very well since my last hospital stay - it has all been worth it! I'm proud of myself, and feel like a new person! I know this is a lifetime commitment, and I will continue to keep up all my good work and use this new tool to my advantage each and every day. I am so grateful.
I have more confidence to try new things in life! I work out daily, can jog and run again. Feel awesome! I had trouble with poor food choices and eating mindlessly at night. Life is good!
This is by far one of the best decisions I ever made in my life!
I am very pleased with my weight loss surgery. I not only lost weight, but I feel so much better and can do things that I haven't been able to do in many years.
This was the best thing I ever did for myself to put a "tool" into my personal "toolbox!"
Although my progress is slow and old habits are hard to break, I am very pleased with my overall results. I am a "work in progress." My biggest challenge has been not to drink and eat at the same time but I would definitely do the procedure all over again. Health-wise I am doing 100% better and that's what matters most! Thank you to Marcy Meyer and all the staff and Dr. Paya. It's made a huge positive difference in my life.
