Neurology & Neurosurgery

Neurology is the study and treatment of diseases of the nervous system. The nervous system includes the Brain, and Spinal Cord as well as:

  • The coverings of the brain and spinal cord
  • Muscles of the body
  • Cranial nerves connected to the face, eyes, ears, nose and throat
  • Peripheral nerves of the arms and legs
  • Autonomic nerves which innervate the internal organs including blood vessels and sweat glands

Neurological disorders include strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and brain and spine injuries, to name only a few, and they kill an estimated 6.8 million people each year globally. Each year 101 of every 100,000 Americans have a traumatic brain injury and nearly five out of every 100,000 Americans suffer a spinal cord injury.

Why You Might Need A Neurologist: The World Health Organization (WHO), reports that neurological disorders ranging from migraines to epilepsy and dementia, affect up to 1 billion people worldwide and that number is destined to rise as populations age.

Spine Fractures: Fifteen years of studies show that spine fractures are a significant cause of disability and death.

Traumatic Brain Injury from Falls and Stroke: According to a 2005 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 56,000 hospitalizations and almost 8,000 deaths among Americans age 65 and older due to traumatic brain injuries because of falls. Every 45 seconds, someone in America has a stroke, the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Someone dies from a stroke every 5.1 minutes. Strokes, often called "brain attacks," are the nation's third (3rd) cause of death and leading cause of long-term disability. Yearly, 750,000 Americans experience stroke and about 160,000 die from it. 500,000 strokes are first attacks and 200,000 are recurrent.

Automobile Accidents: In 2007, more than 41,000 people in the United States died and almost 2.5 million were injured in more than six million car crashes. And car crashes are the leading cause of spinal cord injury in the United States for those 65 and younger. Nearly 13 percent of people in car crashes suffer spine injuries that could lead to paralysis or death.

Autism or Dementia: 1.5 million Americans live with the effects of autism spectrum disorder. In 2009, the CDC reported that the prevalence of autism has risen to 1 in every 110 births in the United States and almost 1 in 70 boys. Two percent of dementia cases appear before the age of 65, and the prevalence of dementia doubles for every 5 years that people live over the age of 65.

Neurologists and neurosurgeon specialists at West Hills Hospital & Medical Center help the young to senior citizens with neurological disorders which may include degenerative processes of the central brain and spinal cord) and peripheral (nerves) nervous system, including degenerative diseases of the cervical and lumbar spine and normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), failed backs, including failed spinal surgery, traumatic and pathologic spine diagnoses and image guided surgical cancer treatments of the brain and spine.

If you should need surgery for a neurological condition, these highly skilled specialists perform state-of-the-art brain, spinal cord and spine surgery using minimally invasive procedures that give them the ability to miniaturize equipment and use cameras to see inside the body. Laparoscopic instruments allow surgeons to perform the same techniques as "open" procedures without large incisions.

Spine-related pain relief: West Hills Hospital also offers options for relief of spine-related pain. These include operative (traditional and minimally invasive) and non-operative (selective spinal injections) treatment modalities/options to spinal disease.
